Water Palaver
Water Palaver
Bruichladdich is the only whisky that is bottled on Islay, at the distillery itself, and benefits from being reduced to the desired bottling strength with Islay spring water.
So it was interesting to see that Jura's marketing department have produced a series of entertaining promotional videos about Jura whisky, one being The Jura Challenge: Whisky and Water.
Apart from the rather irritating Jilly Gouldon-like performances, Jura's Brand Ambassador, Whisky Entertainer and all round Nose - the legendary Richard Patterson - agrees that 60% of Jura whisky is made with Islay water. Islay water? What's wrong with their own? you might well ask.
"Your whisky would be 60% Islay water" says Colin, the keen cocktail maker in the white coat, inferring the strength of the whisky is 40% ABV. "Yes that's correct" confirms Richard. So as the mixologist adds Jura malt to the crushed mint in the glass he confirms once again: "I am putting 60% of your Islay water in to the cocktail" to which Richard hurriedly replies: "yes, yes."
Strange that, as Jura, like most Scotch whiskies (at least those still bottled in the UK) is bottled in Glasgow with its water.
Autographed photos all round!
