Port Dundas Shuts Down

What was once the largest distillery in Scotland and possibly the world, according to Alfred Barnard in 1885 is to close with the loss of 900 jobs.

Port Dundas was once owned by the Harvey familly - the founders of Bruchladdich.

The huge grain distillery was owned by the Macfarlane family. Marion Harvey, a sister of William Harvey the father of Bruichladdich's founder,  married Robert MacFarlane in the early nineteenth century.

The Glasgow distillery was later amalgamated with the Harvey's Cowlairs distillery that had come into the dynastic whisky familly via the Gourlays.

In 1877 it was bought out by DCL - the forerunner to Diageo.

Roseile claims its first victim.
