New Mash Tun Doors
New Mash Tun Doors
New trap doors for the 127 year old mash tun are being installed today.
Duncan and his team, with the help of our friend Lynsdey Dunlop from Skipness Engineering, have to remove the four older doors located underneath the bottom of the cast iron mash tun. The doors allow the draff to be removed from the ancient mash tun once the wort has been drained away. It's cramped work, there is only a couple of feet of space within which to work.
The open-topped mash tun is the largest of the handful left in use today, and the only one of it's kind still in use on Islay - so let's hope the tun is empty before the doors are unbolted.
